EnergyREV at “Glastonbury for politicians”

Prof David Elmes, Professor of Practice, Warwick Business School, University of Warwick

29th September 2021

EnergyREV researcher Professor David Elmes of Warwick Business School joined MPs and policymakers at this summer’s Big Tent Leaders’ Summit. Referred to as “Glastonbury for politicians”, the summit pitched its tent in the centre of Coventry this year, recognising the city’s role as UK City of Culture. The summit seeks to create a space for non-partisan conversations about big policy issues. Green growth, net zero and the future of transport were all on this year’s agenda.

Discussions with the Rt. Hon Kwasi Kwarteng MP, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy allowed David to ask if we can expect to see greater devolution of energy so that every part of the UK can have the smart local energy system that best fits its needs. While the Secretary of State pointed out the success of national programmes like offshore wind, he reflected on a recent visit to Norway in agreeing the role for local as well. This was picked up in following discussions with Andy Street, West Midlands Mayor, who commented that “energy devolution – you heard it here”.
